San Fernando Valley is Now Home to “The Cube”

History was made at the Hansen Dam Recreation Area this past Saturday. The doors opened to the Discovery Cube of Los Angeles. This is the first museum to open in the San Fernando Valley; most museums are either near downtown Los Angeles or West Los Angeles.

Several years ago, plans for a museum in the valley area were being implemented. The Children’s Museum of Los Angeles, the entity spearheading the effort,  went bankrupt and the building was left vacant for seven years as a result. The Discovery Science Foundation recently obtained the building and served as the driving force behind bringing the Discovery Cube Children’s Museum to the San Fernando Valley.

LA’s Bureau of Sanitation and Department of Water and Power teamed up with the Discovery Foundation to create some very innovative exhibits. These exhibits include a virtual helicopter ride over California’s water sources and a “sustainability inspector course” that teaches participants how to inspect a home for sustainability practices. There is even a game called “the race to zero” where players have to learn what do divert from a landfill before it is too late.

The museum is allowing all visitors to enter at $10 per person (children under 3 are free). This introductory admission is for a limited time, so act now! The museum is located at 11800 Foothill Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 91342. For more information, please visit http://www.discoverycube.org/la/
